The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) defines “interesting” as follows. “Adapted to excite interest; having the qualities which rouse curiosity, engage attention, or appeal to the emotions; of interest.” What exactly does this mean, though? Does being interesting matter?

In my first week as a freshman at the University of Ottawa, I was led through the English Department by fourth years and introduced to some of the professors. They each gave a shpiel about how valuable our degrees would be to us after having completed them. The shpiel that’s stuck to me most ended with an emphatic “You will complete your degree a more interesting person.” Wow, I thought, how exciting! I’ll be of interest one day.

It’s unfortunate being interesting doesn’t matter anymore.
